The fish market
The fish market at the port of Capbreton is not to be missed. Outside the harbour-master’s office our 19 fishing boats present the day’s catch.
All year round seasonal fish is sold from tables, all locally caught and all unbeatably fresh.
The surplus is picked up daily by a truck from the Saint Jean de Luz/Ciboure fish auction.
One of the particularities of Capbreton is that the fishermen can sell their catch directly, without going through the daily fish auction , and can fix their own prices. This exception to the rule comes from a 17th century decree by Jean-Baptiste Colbert, one of Louis XIV’s ministers.
The market sellers give expert advice on the choice and cooking methods for each fish and will scale, gut and filet the fish as required.
Fish are sold directly by the fishermen daily
from 9am to 12pm and 3pm to 6pm, depending on the day’s catch.
